This was a new architecturally significant building and the first of a number of major additions to the Springfield Air National Guard facility located adjacent to the Springfield Beckley Municipal Airport. Half of the building is a dining facility. The other half consists of offices, meeting and examination rooms to serve as a Medical Training Facility.
The dining area has a high curved roof with the steel structure exposed from below. The roof is standing seam. A curtain wall encloses the high end of the structure; otherwise the building is faced with brick. Included is full service kitchen.
The Training Facility is a flat roofed structural steel framed building. The exterior walls are CFM framed and faced with brick. Standard metal stud and drywall construction forms the interior.
Butt Construction was the prime contractor as part of a joint venture with Walsh Construction.
This project was a renovation impacting 260,000 SF of the existing 786,000 SF Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. Renovated areas included: administration areas, exam rooms, treatment rooms, operating rooms, intensive care unit, kitchen and dining areas, and mechanical spaces, all completed while maintaining the full operational function of each area. The renovation also included infrastructure upgrades to the central utility plant, new roofing, and a landscaped green space outdoor area.
In addition to the modernization of the facility, the goal of the project was to physically consolidate both patient care and administrative support functions to provide improved care to the patients and to increase the efficiency of administrative operations. The Medical Center is a critical facility at WPAFB serving approximately 58,000 patients, who required that it remain in full operation during construction. This created an extremely demanding environment for a contractor to operate in, but we met the challenge with a strategy that included a comprehensive safety program and ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment), a “Best Practices” program, a detailed and continuously updated schedule, and localized work plans to maximize efficiency and productivity.
Construction was not the only service provided. We procured all of the medical equipment and furniture, coordinated the transition of departments and implementation of equipment with the staff, and oversaw inventory control of medical equipment that was to be reused, or was in use on an ongoing basis.
This 10,240SF design build project to construct the new, stand-alone Kittyhawk Satellite Pharmacy serving the 5,500 active duty, 59,000 veterans, and their families in the Dayton area. The pharmacy fills over 1,800 prescriptions daily, which is six times as many as a typical civilian pharmacy, making Kittyhawk Pharmacy the ninth busiest Air Force pharmacy in the world.
The pharmacy includes administrative offices, a patient consultation room, waiting room, a conference room/break room, and restrooms. The robot installed to fill refill prescriptions is the latest model from the manufacturer and Kittyhawk was the first installation to receive the cutting edge technology. The robot has the capability of filling 8,000 prescriptions in an 8 hour shift. We installed an automated queuing system to assist with patient management.
This new-construction project on a constrained site required extensive site work to prepare the area for construction. Water, sanity sewer, and natural gas had to be added and connected to the existing infrastructure system on the Base. The site also includes stormwater management. The parking area provides spaces for patients and staff and sidewalks were constructed to access the main entrance as well as the mechanical yard. A drive through pickup window was constructed
To provide the most uninterrupted workspace for pharmacy flow and efficiency, clearspan construction was important to the customer. The pharmacy is a single-story structure with a concrete slab-on-grade floor. The roof is comprised of a clear span truss roof. The structure consists of a metal roof deck over open web steel trusses and joists supported on wide flange steel beams and columns.
